Pre & Post Care : Waxing
Pre-Care
To get the full benefit of your wax appointment follow these pre-care tips!
Hair Length
Your hair needs to be 1/4 of an inch, aka the length of a grain of rice. This means from the last time you shaved, you need to wait at minimum 2 weeks. Trust us when we say your hair doesn't grow much faster than everyone else's. It may feel that way, but that 2 week wait is critical.
Pain Relief
You can absolutely take an Advil, Tylenol, ibuprofen based pill 20–30 minutes before your appointment to help reduce some discomfort and stress. Avoid hot showers and exercise the day of as this can tighten the pores and cause more pain during a wax. Get enough sleep and avoid caffeine before a wax as this can cause sensitivity while waxing.
Clothing Choices
When getting body waxing, it is ideal to wear loose fitted clothing, and if getting a brazilian, bikini, or bumkini, it is highly recommended to avoid any type of lace on the area. We want to avoid clothing and skin rubbing or chaffing on your newly waxed skin.
Exfoliate and Mositurize
Exfoliation and moisturizing will make your wax a much smoother experience when done 2–3 times a week. However, please avoid doing this the day before, day of, or day after a wax to avoid over exfoliating the skin, as waxing does a light exfoliation as well. And avoid adding extra products to the skin.
Tanning and Sun Exposure
The sun/UV exposure and waxing are not friends. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 24–48 hrs before your waxing appointment. You want the skin to be hydrated prior to your appointment to avoid skin lifting. Avoid fake tans before your appointment as waxing can remove the tan colour from the skin.
Heat
Avoid taking hot showers or baths, saunas, or hot tubs the day of your appointment as this can make the skin more sensitive and tightens up the pores, trapping the hair follicles.
Exercise
Avoid exercise the day before and the day of a wax appointment, as this can add heat to the skin and cause sensitivity while waxing.
Caffeine
Avoid caffeine the day before and the day of a wax appointment as caffeine makes the body more sensitive to pain.
Sleep
Make sure you get plenty of rest before your appointment as being tired, or not getting enough sleep will make you more susceptible to pain.
Stress
Stress can make us more susceptible to pain. Make sure you take time to relax beforehand.
Acne Products
Avoid using any topical acne products for 4–6 days prior to your appointment, if it is in the area being waxed. Some of these products can cause skin lifting and reactions.
If you are using ANY acne medication, let us know ASAP. While Accutane needs to stop being used for 1 year minimum from the last time the pill is taken, before we are able to wax.
Post-Care
To get the full benefit of your wax appointment follow these post-care tips!
When to Re-Book
For optimal results, re-book your wax every 4–6 weeks. Your hair will start to go in a pattern, meaning eventually the hair will all grow at once and will grow back less.
Exfoliate and Mositurize
Exfoliation and moisturizing will make your wax a much smoother experience when done 2–3 times a week. However, please avoid doing this the day of or the day after a wax to avoid over exfoliating the skin, or adding extra products to the skin. Wait 24–48 hrs and then return to your regular exfoliating and moisturizing routine.
Wax Residue
We do our best to get the wax residue off the skin after a wax. If, for any reason, you feel sticky or feel wax residue, use a little bit of light oil, or BushBalm wipe or oil on the area.
Tanning and Sun Exposure
Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 24–48 hrs after your waxing appointment. Make sure you use sunscreen as you are more susceptible to burns and hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) in the sun after a wax.
Intimate at Home
After a brazilian, bumkini, we highly recommend caution with sex. Wait about 24–48 hrs before engaging in sex, as this can cause friction, chaffing, and ingrowns in that area.
Heat
Avoid taking hot showers or baths, saunas, or hot tubs for 24 hrs as this can make the skin more sensitive and can traumatize the skin. Shower/bathe in cool to warm water.
Exercise
Avoid exercise and swimming for 24–48 hrs after a wax, as this can cause friction, chaffing and ingrowns.
Body Care Products
Avoid using highly fragrant or heavy products such as lotions, anti-antiperspirants, cosmetics, or feminine hygiene sprays on newly waxed areas for 24–48 hrs.
Aftercare Products
After your waxing appointment, it's important to use the right aftercare products to ensure you are getting the full benefit from your wax appointment. We offer BushBalm Oils and Scrubs amazing for ingrowns, these also will hydrate and exfoliate the area. BushBalm Oils can be used on the same day as your wax. We also have exfoliating gloves that can be used alone or with BushBalm Scrubs.
