F&Q : Waxing

WHY WAX?

Waxing removes the hair from the root. When we remove the root, the body has to physically remake the hair, and it doesn't want to do that. When doing this in a routine, it causes the hair to become softer and finer, and hopefully prevents it from growing again.

WHEN I GET WAXED WILL IT BE PERFECTLY SMOOTH?

If this is the first wax after a shave or trim, absolutely not. Our hair grows at three different rates. What this means is it takes multiple waxes booked 4–6 weeks apart to get the hair to start growing at the same rate! Even a seasoned waxer, shaving or trimming the hair once, can potentially throw off their growth cycle. It's important if you want the full waxing benefit, to make sure you do not shave or trim in between waxes, and that you have your wax routine every 4–6 weeks.

WHY DO YOU PRIMARILY USE SOFT WAX?

Soft wax is our preference, this is what we got taught to use while we were in school and have used the most since. We personally have more success with soft wax than when we use hard wax. There are some areas, and times we use hard wax, such as when we do nostrils and ears. If your aesthetician is waxing properly, there is no difference between soft wax, hard wax, sugaring, or threading. As the goal in all of these techniques is to get the root. It is entirely up to the client what method they prefer, and what method the aesthetician is trained and comfortable with.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY HAIR BE TO GET WAXED?

Your hair needs to be 1/4 of an inch or the length of a grain of rice. At minimum, this means two weeks from the last time you shaved. You may also think that your hair grows fast, and you can come in sooner. Trust us, still wait the 2 weeks, as it very rarely actually grows quickly enough within that time frame for a proper wax to be performed. If the hair is too short, we will re-book the appointment, which is why we strongly ask you to follow the two-week minimum.

CAN I GET WAXED WHILE PREGNANT?

Absolutely, just keep in mind that your sensitivity to waxing is likely to be higher while pregnant. Especially for the Brazilian, as there is much more blood flow to the vagina, which can mean more sensitivity and reactions. We suggest if you start waxing while pregnant, don't wait near the end to start. Do it sooner, as you get more sensitive the longer you're pregnant.

CAN I GET WAXED ON MY PERIOD?

Yes, absolutely! You may be a little more sensitive during the week before, week of, and about 3 days after. But if you wear a tampon, menstrual cup, or on a lighter day and wear a pad to your appointment, you’re good to go!

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIKINI, BUMKINI, AND BRAZILIAN?

Bikini -This removes the hair outside your underwear line and does not include inner thighs, treasure trail, bum, or the outer labia/penile and testicles.

Bumkini - This is the same as a bikini, except it includes waxing between the bum cheeks.

Brazilian - This removes everything front to back, but does not include inner thighs, treasure trail, bum cheeks. If you’d like to leave some hair let us know!

WHY DO I HAVE HAIR GROWING BACK WITHIN TWO WEEKS AFTER A WAX?

Our hair grows at different rates. For the first 6 months of waxing on a regular basis before your hair starts growing at the same rate. As long as you stick to your waxing routine and do not shave, tweeze, Nair, etc. between waxes, your hair will start to grow at the same rate, and make waxing smoother and last longer each time.

It is also important to note that hair grows faster in heat and slower in the cold. So, if you are new to waxing, and you're on a hot vacation, your hair that isn't growing at the same rate as the waxed hair will grow sooner.

If you are a regular waxer, avoid touching the hair between waxes. If you tweeze, shave, trim, epilate, Nair, or any other touch up on the hair, you will have hair growing in sooner, and/or have difficulty getting a smooth wax. It is extremely important to not remove or cut the hair between waxes in order to get the full benefit.

CAN I GET WAXED IF I'M USING RETIN A, RENOVA, OR ACCUTANE?

The short answer is no. Waxing while using these products can be extremely harmful for your skin. This can cause lifting (removing) of the skin and can cause permanent scarring when combined. Please ask your doctor if waxing is right for you. Please make sure to accurately state any medications you are taking on the client forms attached to your confirmation email.

Important to note, if you are using accutane, you CANNOT be waxed for ONE YEAR after the last pill is taken. We need to use extra precaution as this medication affects the skin for much longer.

WHO SHOULD AVOID GETTING WAXED?

  • Anyone currently taking Accutane or who has taken Accutane at any time within the past 12 months

  • Anyone who has taken any acne medication should consult a doctor first

  • Anyone who has an active Herpes outbreak

  • Anyone with sunburn in the treatment area

  • Anyone who has had a chemical peel treatment within the past 7 days in the treatment area

  • Anyone who has used any type of Retinol within the past 48 hours in the treatment area

  • Any area of the skin showing signs of trauma, varricose veins, open or active acne lesions, eczema, psoriasis or any type of dermatitis will not be waxed
